Great Orme Tramway, Llandudno, North Wales
The Great Orme Tramway was first built over 100 years ago as a way to travel to the summit of the Great Orme.
Originally the tramway only ran to what is today called the half-way station with the upper section being constructed some years later.
The lower section of the journey is very steep and offers spectacular views of Llandudno's north shore and town centre.
At the half-way station visitors change trams and then journey on the somewhat less steep second leg to the summit. Whilst the second leg does not offer the same stunning views and the lower section it does allow you to take in some of the natural beauty of the Great Orme as well as passing the Great Orme Copper Mines.
Once at the summit you disembark and can explore the Summit Complex which offers a children's playground, refreshments, a pub, and a gift shop. You can also take a look at some of the wildlife that lives on and around the Great Orme and learn about the its history and how it was formed.
One good idea that is often used by visitors is to purchase just a single ticket for the tram journey and then a take the Great Orme Cable Car back down. Of course you can do the journey the other way round if you prefer. If your first leg is on the tram its always worthwhile checking if the cable car is running however you can always purchase another single at the summit for the trip back down.
